From Bologna to Mali: the Wacky Racers at Dogon Challenge 2010, “non tutti i Mali vengono per nuocere”

Fun and a bit of craziness to help the development of humanitarian projects for Dogon population

A group of crazy friends, the passion for traveling on the road and the desire to try to help concretely the development of humanitarian projects, without simply writing a cheque. These are the ingredients which prompt Wacky Racers, a group of non professional drivers (freely inspired by the successful characters created by Hanna&Barbera during the 60s) to put themselves on the line to live a breathtaking adventure discovering new places, new worlds, and new ways of traveling, but above all with the aim of supporting charity projects in developing countries.

Aurore Martignoni, 31 years old, is Italo-belgian and she is the international member of the team. She is a professional photographer, and she lives and works in Bologna, even if her job brings her all over the word. A photography inspired by the reportage and travels. These are her main passions, and she will be able to combine them during this experience, because, as she says “ the photography speaks to eyes, but in particular to minds”, and in this journey she certainly will be able to immortalize places, environments and people which have many emotions to convey . She will leave with Simona, Matteo and Stefania: the Wacky Racers quartet ships in this crazy and thrilling trip with the enthusiasm of the discovering and the will to put itself on the line.
“With this experience I will have the possibility to match my passions and the humanitarian aspect. Being able to link travel, photography and a charity work is a chance I couldn’t miss: I’m ready and excited about this adventure.”

The first challenge for the Wacky Racers will be the Dogon Challenge 2010, a crazy race to discover the heart of the continent where everything was born: Africa. Leaving from Milan on 26th of December, in less then 15 days of traveling, forgiving the European asphalt roads and entering with hot tyres Morocco roads, the sandy trails of West Sahara and Mauritania, after a rapid transit in Senegal to visit the final destination of the famous Paris-Dakar, they will cross the Savana to head towards Mali’s capital city: Bamako. Here the car used by the team during the trip, a 1997 Fiat Punto 55S, retrieved on Orobiche Alps in Temù, will be gifted to the ONLUS Association Abarekà Nandrèe with the amount of money that the team will have collected with the help of their sponsors and supporters.
Charity is indeed the most important aspect of this crazy race, which makes it even more special and incredibly unique.
Abarekà Nandrée is a laical association wholly formed by volunteers, apolitical and based on self-financing. From 1999 it deals with international cooperation and it is very active in Africa, where it has realized a lot of projects in healthy and educational fields, as well as initiatives of cultural exchange with some italian schools.
Wacky Racers, as well as each team participating at Dogon Challenge, commits itself to donate at least 500 € to the association and this amount, together with the sum gained with the car selling, will be used to help building a school in Bamako. Obviously more funds they can raise, more projects can be delivered, that's why the team is looking for firms and private citizens who want to contribute to the realization of their initiative and assure as much help as possible to Abarekà Nandrée.
